Day 1:
What are myths? How do myths try to explain events in nature?
- Find and compare a myth that tells about the same event in nature, such as the discovery of fire. Use the following site: http://www.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/storfolk.html
2. Use a Venn diagram or other compare and contrast graphic organizer to show how the myth is alike and different.
Day 2:
What problems and solutions are presented in myths?
- Find 5 myths from various countries. Use this site to help you:http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/folktexts.html
- For each myth identify the problem and the solution.
Day 3:
How can studying myths help you or someone else become a better writer?
- Write three guidelines about characters, setting, and plot based on what you read in myths. The guidelines should focus on developing strong characters, making the setting critical to the story, and identifying a problem with a strong solution.
- Use the guidelines you created to write your own myth.
Day 4:
What adjectives does the author use to describe characters in a myth?
1. Make a list of adjectives the author uses to describe characters in a myth.
2. Review the adjectives and tell how the words are used to develop characters.
Day 5:
How can using myths about stars help you remember constellations?
1. Find a myth about a constellation. Use the following site to help you. http://www.dibonsmith.com/stars.htm
2. Draw the constellation and tell how the myth is connected to the constellation.
