Beginning of the Year Information

Dear Parents,

I am your child’s third grade teacher, and I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. I’m looking forward to a very successful year, and I know you are too. I have high expectations for your child, and I will be doing all that I can to help your child achieve those expectations.

There are some things you can do to help. I will be expecting all assigned work to be completed in class or finished at home and returned the next day. The third grade is a very busy place and lots of activities are going on. Sometimes your child may not finish his/her work in class and will need to take it home. The way you can help is to ask your child every school day if school work needs to be done and, if so, make sure your child completes the assignments. Each child is required to have a Green Homework Folder. At the end of each day I will check each student’s assignment notebook and place it in his or her Green Homework Folder to help make sure his/her assignments are recorded for that day. So, please check your child’s Green Homework Folder to see what is required of them for the next day. I feel that homework is often a strong link to parent/child communication.

I also want you to be aware of the following things. First, every Friday there is a scheduled spelling and DOL (daily oral language) test. Your child should be working on preparing for these throughout the week. Also, on Fridays I will be sending a behavior sheet home for you to evaluate and discuss with your child. It will contain your child’s behavior for the week and anything that I might want to bring to your attention. These sheets are due back to me the following Monday.

Second, if your child is absent from school it is his/her responsibility to copy down and pick up make-up work from the class assignment sheet. Finally, students who do not have their work in to me on time will be spending their recess working on it. They will also receive a disciplinary number that day which you will get record of on Friday.

I want you to know that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you. Please do not hesitate to call me. Thank you.

Yours in Learning,

Mrs. Samuelsen

Other important things to remember:

  • Students are required to take home their Green Homework Folder every night; it should include any work needed to be complete, notes to parents, and a daily assignment notebook that has been checked by the teacher.
  •  Please use the Green Homework Folder to send notes and lunch money to school. The large outer pockets work best. Clearly label the envelope containing notes, and/or lunch money with your child’s name, class, and what the money is for. Also be aware that you can pay for lunch money online at the following site: http://www.illinoisepay.com/epay/GetSite?cmd=get&siteId=625
  • Birthday treats may be sent the day of your child’s birthday. Please arrange a time with me at least one day in advance. You are welcome to stay and celebrate your child’s birthday with us.

  • If you would like to send an occasional snack, I know the class would enjoy the treat. Please send items that do not perish, just in case we do not have time to fit a snack into the day. Thanks!

  • Every other Tuesday is "Tuesday Treat Day". Students will be making fresh bread to enjoy during the day.

  • Students are learning to master their math facts and they will be working on memorizing them daily. They will have practice sheets available for them to take home. Please encourage your child to bring these home and practice with you.
